LOUDONVILLE – William H. Ryan, 72, of Loudonville, passed away Monday morning after a courageous battle with cancer, with his beloved wife, Amy, by his side.
Bill was Born in Troy, NY, on November 6, 1952, and was the son of the late John E. and Elizabeth Ryan, Sr. He graduated from Lansingburgh High School in 1971. Bill was a US Army Veteran who served as an Infantryman. He served in various roles, but his most cherished memories were from his time spent as a proud member of the highly prestigious “Old Guard” (3rd Infantry Regiment) that faithfully served with honor at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. While serving his country, he received a variety of awards and honors, including a Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Korea Defense Service Medal.
Following his military service, Bill operated his own contracting business, earned his realtor’s license and briefly worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Prior to retiring, he was employed by Muller Martini in New York City, as a mechanical engineer. Bill also was a treasured and highly regarded member of the Cannon Funeral Home support staff.
Bill’s love for his country and motorcycles led him to become a devoted Patriot Guard Rider who spent countless hours honoring fallen heroes and their families with unwavering commitment and respect. A true patriot, he was known for his loyalty, compassion, and veteran service, always riding with pride in the PGR escort line. Bill leaves behind a legacy of service to our community and will be deeply missed by fellow riders and all who knew him. Bill was amazing man that made many friends everywhere he went, touching so many lives. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor and kindness. He was a beacon of positivity up to the very end of his life. His optimistic attitude was an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
Bill is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 29 years, Amy Ryan; his children Greg Marshall, Katelyn Ryan and Allison Mahar. He is also survived by his brother, Jack (Robin) Ryan; his nieces, Sheila (PJ) Kennedy, Robyn (Randall) Mysliwiec, Samantha (Brandon) Herald, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bill’s family on Sunday, from 1-3 pm, at the Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave, Colonie. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, at 11:00 am, at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 1 Maria Drive, Loudonville. Interment will follow in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Due to the floral restrictions at the cemetery, contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to the Patriot Guard Riders NY (www.pgrny.org).
