William J. Carney

June 14, 1952 — August 3, 2024

Hillsdale, NY - William (Bill) James Carney, 72, of Hillsdale, NY, passed away unexpectedly following a medical complication on August 3, 2024. Born on June 14, 1952, in Troy, NY, Bill was known for his love of animals and his quirky sense of humor.

Bill is survived by his life-long partner of 30 plus years, Patti Brusie-England, his sister Carol Sanders (Barry Sanders), nieces Rebecca Sanders and Laura Sicke, and nephews Christopher and Timothy Carney. He is predeceased by his brother, Michael Carney (Diane Carney) and parents William Joseph Carney and Dorothy May Carney. Bill created "Uncle Bill's Diner," a website where he set up cameras in his barn to welcome both domestic and wild animals, providing them with food and shelter. The livestream could be viewed on his website, allowing others to share in the experience.

Bill would take in cats who were dropped off, abandoned or lost.  At times, he was able to find their owners by taking photos and posting them around Hillsdale.  That intervention was a success resulting in a positive outcome for many of the lost pets and their families. He would work hard to rehome the others.

Bill and Patti met at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY where they were employed on the Behavioral Health Unit and addiction unit when needed.  Patti as a nurse and Bill as a mental health worker. The patients loved Bill.  On Bill's birthday, he would share his birthday cake with the staff and employees of the unit for all to enjoy and celebrate with him.  He would compose a weekly newsletter "Mixed Nuts" which was enjoyed by both patients and staff alike.

Bill loved music and played multiple instruments, primarily the guitar.  He would play at the Jazz Festival at Saratoga Springs.  He enjoyed the music of Ozzy Osborne, the humor of South Park and had a personal friendship with Rodney Dangerfield until the famous comedian passed away.  He was intrigued by the universe and had a very large collection of books written about aliens.  He was a formidable ice hockey player with a low center of gravity which made him difficult to be pushed down.

The list of his achievements and interests is indeed endless.  Bill was loved by many, and we will miss him.  We will remember the good memories and the good times.  Until we meet again, hugs all around and may God bless everyone.

A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be on Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 2pm-4pm located at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave, Colonie.  We hope you can join us.
