Sylvia Delamar

May 21, 1939 — December 13, 2023

Sylvia Angelica Delamar

Sylvia Delamar was born May 21, 1939 to the late Joseph Hodge and Gwendolyn Iona Hodge in New York, New York.  She was called to her eternal home on Wednesday, December 13, 2023.

Sylvia professed a belief in Christ at an early age, attending Church on Sundays with her siblings.  Sylvia was educated in the New York City public schools.  As a young woman she loved to sing, model and act on stage.  She moved upstate to continue her education and offer her young children a new beginning. While living in Colonie, NY, the Haizlip family took Sylvia under their wing and maintained a special relationship with her over the years. Sylvia took classes at Albany Business College and worked for the State of New York at several agencies, including: the Health Department, the Education Department and the Consumer Protection Board.  Sylvia earned her Associates Degree in Science in 1981 and started a new career in real estate, working for Realty USA and Select Homes.  She loved meeting new families and even guiding her children through the process of buying their own homes. Sylvia received multiple awards earning her a spot in the Million Dollar club for her sales record.

Sylvia was blessed with three children from her marriage to the late Franklin Washington, Sr.:  Sheila, Franklin Jr. and Sabrina.  While working in Albany, Sylvia met George William Delamar.  When the two married on November 21, 1970, two families became one, and Sylvia gained two daughters, Denise and Leatrice.  The family continued to grow, with the additions of Shelley and Sophia completing the family unit.  George and Sylvia celebrated fifty years of marriage in 2020.

Sylvia and George united with the Friendship Baptist Church and were baptized in 2011. Sylvia sang in the choir and enjoyed worship and fellowship with the congregation.  Sylvia also loved to worship with the Arbor Hill Church of God in Christ where her late son-in-law, the Right Reverend Elder Calvert Bowie was Pastor, and her daughter Sabrina served as First Lady.  Sylvia was loved by the members of both churches and left an impact on all who met her.

Sylvia loved to travel with George, and she had a great love for family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
