Malta, NY - Robert (Bobby) P. Smith, age 61, of Malta, NY passed away on February 4, 2019 at Albany Medical Center after a courageous battle with colon cancer.  Bobby was born in Athol, MA on February 3, 1958, son of the late Stanley and Wanda Smith.


Bobby is survived by his loving wife, Laurie (Powling) Smith, sisters Jean Brenner of Carefree, AZ and Nancy Mailman of Elgin, SC and many cousins, nephews, and a niece.


Bobby graduated from Athol High School in 1976 where he was an accomplished three-sport athlete excelling in football, basketball and baseball.  Bobby received the Daniel J. MacDonald Memorial Award presented by the Athol Booster Association to the Outstanding Male Athlete in the graduating class of 1976.  He also received the 1976 MVP award for Baseball.

Bobby previously worked for the City of Scottsdale, AZ as a Supervisor for the Gainey Ranch/Troon Village Waste Water Reclamation Plant and most recently retired from the Town of Colonie, NY as Operations Supervisor for the Waste Water Treatment Facility.


Bobby married Laurie Ann Powling, formerly of Orange, MA on December 10, 1988.  Bobby cherished the time he spent with the love of his life, Laurie, vacationing on the Maine coast and Cape Cod.  Together they enjoyed attending many Patriot, Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins games.  Bobby also enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and fishing as well.

A private family service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org or to the Chuck Stone Little League, P.O.Box 625, Athol, MA 01331.
