Albany – Robert “Bob” Allen, 90, of Albany, NY, passed away on November 26, 2023 at home, in the house he lived in for 66 years, with loving family at his side.
Bob was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Allen in 2010, and his parents, Alma and Robert Allen. Left to cherish his memory are his three children, Pam Allen, Stephanie (Bob) Clauson and Stephan (Jean Cox) Allen, grandchildren Jamie Clauson, Matthew Allen and Sara Allen, and his brother, Earl Allen. We are forever grateful to his brother, Earl, who faithfully visited his older sibling three times a week to drink coffee, talk sports and ponder just about anything.
Born on January 9, 1933 in Albany, NY, where he lived his entire life, Bob graduated from Albany High School and served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean conflict. Known affectionately by crew members as “Bunky,” Bob was a tower-crew supervisor for Niagara Mohawk, retiring in 1992 after 40 years of service. He loved his work, which was reflected in his near-perfect attendance record and impeccable work ethic. To the amazement of neighbors, Bob was in his late-80s and still digging out shrubs, lugging 5-gallon pails of compost to the garden and offering to take down trees for everyone in the neighborhood.
Bob was absolutely devoted to his grandchildren, who reciprocated by bringing him donuts (his favorite breakfast food), sending cards (he loved getting mail, including junk) and listening to stories of his youth that not even his children had heard before. He had a knack for capturing an audience and making new friends, and happily spent his time chatting-up everyone, from the cashier at Price Chopper to the home-care nurse to the mailman. Anyone who knew Bob knew his affinity for 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles and his determination to finish them, regardless of their difficulty. If the light was on in the living room, chances are Bob was hunting for that next puzzle piece and waving to the neighbors passing by.
A graveside service and interment will be private with family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Capital City Rescue Mission or Veterans Miracle Center.
