Raymond Fred Heitzman, 77, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at his home following a long illness.
Born and raised in Albany, NY, he was a 1964 graduate of Albany High School. He graduated from Hudson Valley Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Drafting and then earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Drafting followed by a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from SUNY Albany.
Ray served in the US Navy during the Vietnam Era and was honorably discharged.
He retired from the New York State Office of General Services as a Program Manager (SG-27) for Psychiatric Centers following 37 years of service.
Ray loved politics and enjoyed serving for over 10 years on the Clifton Park Zoning Board. He also held a real estate salesperson license.
In earlier years, he was an avid bowler who was recognized for his high average with the State Architects Bowling League. In later years, he was an avid golfer and also enjoyed teaching golf.
Foremost, he enjoyed fishing, especially at his camp on Saratoga Lake. He will be remembered as a competitive card and chess player. He loved sports and was an avid NY Mets and NY Jets fan.
Besides his parents Fred and Ida Heitzman, he is pre-deceased by a brother Warren Henry (Dorothy) Heitzman, a sister Gloria Heitzman Cichon (Robert) and their son David Cichon.
He is survived by a niece and three nephews - Alan (Mary) Heitzman, Linda (Michael) Storonsky, Russell Cichon, and Douglas (Paula) Cichon; a son Scott Heitzman; as well as several great nieces and great nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 9:30am Saturday December 16 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Colonie.
Calling hours will be held from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Friday, December 15 at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Avenue, Colonie.
