Schenectady – Paul Sawchuk, 98, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2024.
Born in Schenectady, on July 5, 1926, he was the son of the late Adam and Frances Sawchuk. He was a
lifelong resident of Schenectady having grown up in the Hamilton Hill area. His first job was selling
newspapers as child in front of the former Van Curler Hotel. He graduated from Nott Terrace High
School where he played on the football and basketball teams. He was an Army veteran, proudly serving
in World War II. After his honorable discharge, he was employed by the General Electric Company as a
turbine assembler for 30 years, retiring in 1984.
Pauly enjoyed spending summers at his camp on Sacandaga Lake with his family swimming,
fishing, and boating. He played the accordion and had a passion for Polish music. Paul was an expert
baker, apple strudel was his specialty. He loved the sport of horseracing and spent many mornings at
the Saratoga training track where his son-in-law trained thoroughbreds.
He is predeceased by his wife of more than 30 years, Claire, his son John, his brother Peter, and his
sister Helen.
Pauly is survived by his children, Janet Varvaro (Vincent) of Niskayuna, Paula Anderson (Kevin) of
Washington State, Cathy-Ann Hayostek of Glenville; grandchildren, Cassia, Isabella, Meikel, Corey,
Zachary, Avery, Brittanie, and Shawnie; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private.
