Albany - Marion R. Ferraro passed away peacefully at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home Monday, October 31, 2022. Born in Albany, NY on Veteran’s Day November 11, 1919, she was just shy of her 103rd birthday. She now joins her parents Salvadore Ferraro and Catherine Orsino and all her siblings: Joseph, Frank, Louis, James, and Catherine Murgia, leaving behind several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews scattered across the country.
After saving her money with a stint at the Albany Knickerbocker News and a lengthy nanny assignment, Marion made her way to New York City, enrolled in Manhattanville College and earned a degree in nursing. Ten years later she completed her Masters Degree at New York University while working as a public health nurse in the city. She continued with the Department of Health for over 45 years, earning numerous certificates and citations and serving in a supervisory capacity in the Bureau of Child Heath. As the profession began to unionize, Marion became an avid activist, earning a certificate in Labor Studies at Cornell University.
Marion enjoyed traveling the world, sometimes with her union colleagues as well as on her own as a most independent woman. Her last trip at age 93 took her to Rome for the canonization of Catherine Tekawitha. Marion moved back to her roots 17 years ago and settled into the Beltrone Living Center in Colonie for 15 years before finding continued contentment at Daughters of Sarah. Her family is most grateful for the care and attention she was afforded there.
Funeral services will be held at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave in Colonie at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2022 with a visiting hour at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens in Colonie.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made in Marion’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, sent to: Memorial Giving, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online at https://www.stjude.org/memorial.
