John L. Wescott

September 1, 1967 — February 14, 2021

John L. Wescott, 53, at rest Sunday, Feb 14 at Mt. Sinai Hospital West in Manhattan, following a brave battle with cancer.

Born Sept 1, 1967 in Binghamton, NY, he was the son of late Alton A. and Joan M. (Waters) Wescott.

John was a 1985 graduate of South Colonie High School and a 1989 graduate of Hudson Valley Community College.

John spent his childhood on Natick Street in Colonie before moving to Albany. He was a professional musical theatre performer and tap dancer par excellence. After moving to Manhattan, he toured throughout the U.S. and internationally, including performing in 42nd Street in Moscow, the first American musical to open for an extended run there.  For many years, he performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Christmas Concert.  During his career, he maintained close ties with the Park Playhouse in Albany as a performer and choreographer, and he came out of retirement in 2013 to perform throughout Southern California, doing several shows with San Diego Musical Theater (SDMT).

After hanging up his tap shoes, John moved to Brooklyn and followed his husband-to-be into a career in real estate, eventually forming the Stanard Wescott Team at The Corcoran Group in New York City.  While working as a realtor, John’s passion for travel led him into yet one more career, as a flight attendant with United Airlines. At one point, John was dancing, flying, and selling real estate at the same time!

A friend of Bill W., in January John proudly celebrated 17 years of continuous sobriety.

John leaves his devoted spouse Timothy Stanard; brother of Mark (Peg) Wescott, Mary Wescott, and Andrew (Dee) Wescott; uncle to Reagan, Ryan, Sarah, Emily and Connor Wescott and Eitom Tsadok; as well as his beloved kitties Stu, Polly, and Kitty Carlisle Hart, and his husband’s loving family.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:30pm Sunday, Feb 21 at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave, Albany, NY.  Friends and family may call from 2:00pm to 3:30pm prior to the service. In addition, A Celebration of Life service will be held in New York City in March, details to be announced.

Memorial donations may be made to: American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, or Human Rights Campaign.
