VOORHEESVILLE – Joan Carole Flynn, 85, of Voorheesville, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 03, 2023 at her residence, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. She was surrounded by the love of her cherished family.
Joan will be remembered for her crystal blue eyes and her infectious smile. She had a warm and welcoming personality that could make a friend with a total stranger. Joan was born and raised in Walton, NY, the daughter of the late Charles and Marian VanderVoort. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph “Tom” Flynn and her sister, Judith Syron.
Joan and her late sister Judy enjoyed joyful childhood summers on their grandmother’s farm. They hid in the closet on Labor Day when their mother came to collect them to return to school. She graduated from Albany Business College where she met Bert Blair, her lifelong best friend/sister. Joan retired from the Ann Lee Home where she was the Administrator’s secretary. She loved the residents, and they loved her. After retiring, Joan and Tom continued traveling, their favorite destination would become the Florida Keys, where they spent winters. She loved her labs (Gracie), cooking, baking, entertaining and joyful family gatherings.
Joan is the beloved mother of Karen E. Flynn, John (Patty) Flynn, CDR, USCG (retired)., Mary Jane (Frank) Gallo, Catherine (Ray) Zimmermann and the late Susan M. Flynn. She is the cherished grandmother of John (Chrissy), Brendan, Padraic (Lauren) and Joseph Flynn, Mary Frances, Anthony and Michael Gallo, Susan (Nate) Hill and Meghan (Michael) Gallagher. Joan is the great grandmother of Flynn and Sullivan Hill and Graham Flynn. She is also survived by several loved nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday morning at 10:00 am at St. Matthew’s Church, Voorheesville. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Joan’s family on Tuesday from 9 to 10 am at St. Matthew’s Church, 25 Mountainview Street, Voorheesville. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont. Memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s memory to NENY Alzheimer’s Ass’n. (alz.org) or Community Hospice of Albany, 310, S.
