Jean M. Mccarthy

Jean Marie McCarthy, 89, born and raised in Watervliet, New York and a longtime resident of Colonie, passed away Monday July 10, 2023 at St. Peter’s Hospital.

Born on January 7, 1934, in Troy, NY, she was the daughter of Henry and Catherine (McGaughneau) Peters. Jean was a 1951 graduate of Watervliet High School. In addition to the many years as a mother of 4 and a wife, she was employed with the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles for 31 years, retiring in 2008. In earlier years, she was employed at McCarthy’s Beer Garden, American Bell Telephone Company, and JC Penny’s.

Jean always enjoyed traveling, particularly spending time at the ocean in Maine and Cape Cod and several local lakes. On a regular basis, she would look forward to getting together with her friends and family at restaurants to have everyone tell stories and reminisce.

Besides her parents, she is pre-deceased by her husband Dennis “Frank” McCarthy (2019), her son Francis H. McCarthy (2014), her sister, Margaret Bacheldor and a son-in-law Donald G. Safranec.

She leaves her daughters: Catherine E. McCarthy of Virginia Beach, VA, Denise M. Safranec and Fiancé Joel Obuchowski of Loudonville, and Margaret Ann “Peggy” McCarthy-Hughes of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren: Adam & Amy Safranec, Rachel E. Safranec, Dennis & Rebecca Hughes, Jay Hughes, and Jeannette Ashley Schofield; great-grandchildren: Caleb and Logan Hughes; sister-in-law Madeline Kilcullen of Watervliet; along with several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, 9am, July 26, 2023, at St. Clare’s Church, 1947 Central Ave, Colonie. Burial will be at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, on Tuesday, July  25, 2023 at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave, Colonie.
