Albany - James (Jim) Brennan Hughes, 74, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at his home, after a long and courageous battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Jim was born on May 5, 1950 in Albany, NY to the late Joseph A. Hughes, Sr. and Mary Brennan Hughes and was a lifelong Albany resident.
Jim attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and Vincentian Institute (VI) High School, graduating in 1968. He was among the first male students to attend the College of St. Rose, where he was an outstanding player on the men’s basketball team, graduating in 1972. Jim worked as a business manager for the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District, but spent most of his career working as an examiner for the New York State Legislative Bill Drafting Commission.
Jim was an exceptional athlete and a lifelong NY Giants and NY Yankee fan. He will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was a history buff, a voracious reader with impeccable recall for details, and he loved music of all kinds. Jim had a countless number of lifelong loyal friends who stood by his side throughout his illness. The family extends a special thanks to Bill Chiacchia who worked tirelessly to support Jim during his difficult battle.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph A. Hughes, Jr. and Suzanne H. Meher, and his nephew, Shawn Meher. Jim is survived by his brother Daniel P. Hughes (Linda Joyce) of Venice, FL, his brother-in-law, Daniel Meher of Albany, his sister-in-law, Ann Hughes, of Venice, FL and his loving companion, Anne McClelland. He leaves behind his dedicated nieces and nephews, who were his biggest cheerleaders throughout his illness: Moira Mills (Sean), Patrick Hughes (Elisa), Brendan Hughes (Rebecca), Erin Davison, Megan Battibulli (Michael), and his many grand nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Avenue, Colonie. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 10:00 am
at Historic St. Mary’s Church, Lodge & Pine Streets, Albany. Interment will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, NY.
