Homer “Daddy” “Papa” “Uncle” Joseph Smith son of a sharecropper, Freddie Smith & Sidan Ponder, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, October 20, 2020.  He was born February 09, 1932, in Thomasville GA.

Homer was predeceased by his loving wife, Helen L. Smith, Myrtle Beach SC, his daughter, Dorothy L. Garnes, Owings Mills, MD, and siblings Ashley Peter Smith, Oakland CA, Minnie Lee Cox, Brooklyn NY and Mary Jane Brown Schenectady, NY.

Homer is a Korea War Veteran, drafted in the United States Army in 1953,  after his service Homer spent over 30 years working for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Mill, along with a host of other jobs and entrepreneurial ventures to support and raise his lovely family of six children with his wife Helen Smith.

In service of his Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Homer and Helen were eucharistic ministers with Saint John Evangelist Parish in Schenectady New York,  after the retirement of Homer and Helen they continued to serve the Lord as eucharistic ministers at St. James Catholic Church in Conway South Carolina.

Homer is a God given prodigy with so many talents that he has passed on to his children and grandchildren.  A life long learner, Homer finally received his GED in his 70’s.  He was a carpenter, electrician, plumber, mechanic, entrepreneur and lastly after retirement Homer became a self-taught computer technician, this being one of his primary hobbies during his retirement in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Homer and his wife Helen, loved to host family at their homes on Strong street and Ardsley Road in Schenectady and later in smaller gatherings, in Myrtle Beach, SC. A man with a heart of gold, and anchored to his strong faith, he touched people everywhere he went. He was a humble quiet soul that loved his family, the South, his cars, and especially his "secret Macaroni & Cheese Recipe".

Homer is survived by his children Sondra Marie Madison Schenectady, NY Ricardo Joseph Smith; Schenectady NY, Andrea Michelle Smith, Niskayuna NY;  Michael Anthony Joseph Smith; Sylvan Beach NY. and Rachael Anne Monte Kensington CA.  He is survived by 20 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, a host nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many many close friends of the years in Schenectady and then in Myrtle Beach.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 05, from 10 - 12 p.m. at the Lord's House of Deliverance Baptist Church @ 298 St. Agnes Hwy, Cohoes, NY12047.  A memorial and celebration service will follow immediately after. Gathering size within the chapel will be based on the most current N.Y.S. occupancy requirements. Masks are required, and social distancing is to be observed inside and outside the church.

Flowers will be accepted on behalf of Homer's family in lieu of donations, to honor his giving heart please send donations to one of his many charities such as St. Judes and Shriners Children’s Hospital.
