GUILDERLAND – George Cavanaugh, 76, of Guilderland passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, March 12, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Bronx, NY and was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Anne Cosgrove Cavanaugh. George was a graduate of Manhattan College and SUNY @ Albany. He served in the US Army from 1964 through 1967. George was employed with NYS Retirement System for over 35 years, serving in several managerial positions before he retired. He was a kind and generous man that never had a negative thing to say about anyone. George was a longtime member and former Grand Knight of the Fr. Joseph H. Boldt Knights of Columbus Council #3357. He was a faithful and dedicated communicant of Christ the King Church where he served on several ministries including coordinator of lectors, Eucharistic minister and the bereavement group. George was a volunteer reading teacher at the Giffen School in Albany and was recognized by Albany County for all of his charitable work. He was an avid New York Yankee and New York Giants fan.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Sarah M. Cavanaugh; his son Brian S. (Lauren) Cavanaugh; cherished grandchildren Jeremiah and Lydia and several much-loved sisters and brothers in laws, nieces and nephews. He is the brother of the late Joseph and Catherine Cavanaugh. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with George’s family on Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumter Ave. Guilderland. The parish family will gather at 4:30 for a prayer of remembrance. All are invited. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 10:00 at Christ the King Church. Interment will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
