Flor Rosario Hernandez, 90, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on November 2, 2019 at the Baptist Health Nursing Rehabilitation Center. Flor was born on March 14, 1929 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico to the late Enrique Hernandez and Clemencia Rosario. He was the oldest of 6 siblings. Flor had a passion for the game of baseball and pitched in various leagues throughout Puerto Rico. He was a devoted New York Yankees fan who rarely missed an inning.
Flor proudly served his country in the Army from 1952-1961 as a Medical Specialist in the Korean War. After the military, Flor moved to New York and worked at The New York Hospital as a Medical Aide. He graduated from The Monroe Business Institute with a degree in Bookkeeping and Business. After graduating, Flor served on the political campaign of Herman Badillo, first Puerto Rican to serve in Congress.
Flor is predeceased by his spouse, Georgina Lopez, with which he had one daughter, Tania (John) Hernandez-Carkner and 3 step-children, Grisela (George) Pacheco, Migdalia (Greg) Hicks, and Sergio (Martiza) Plumey. Flor had 5 children with his first wife: Aida (Kenneth) Snow, Jose Hernandez, Nilda Hernandez, Lydia Hernandez and Alicia (Luis) Garcia. Flor is also survived by his grandchildren, Dha'Sean Serrano (Javier), Christian Serrano (C.J.), Michael Plumey (Myla and Drake), Natalie Pacheco, Mary (Keith) Carpenter, Giovanni Garcia, Glendalyz Garcia, Jose Hernandez Jr, Nyldalyz Hernandez, Jafet Davila, Elimelec Davila and Sujei Davila. Flor also leaves behind many other great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Avenue, Colonie, NY on Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.; Burial service immediately to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Colonie, NY.
In honor of Flor's military service and Puerto Rican heritage, guests are welcome to wear red, white and blue.
