Niskayuna - Edward G. Konkol, of Niskayuna, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of January 10, 2023 at the age of 93.
Ed was born in Cohoes, NY to Joseph and Cornela Konkol. He was preceded in death by his parents and both siblings, Josephine and Michael. Ed was married to his late wife, Barbara Konkol, for thirty-seven years before she passed away in 2019.
Ed is survived by his children Deborah Doty (Bob), Joseph Konkol (Kay), Wendy Folensbee (Charlie), and David Wood (Tiffanie), along with stepchildren Donna Herkel, Debbe Farry (Tim), and Diane Wood.
Ed, or “Poppie” as he was affectionately called, is additionally survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren who provided him with much joy and happiness. Poppie was a hands-on grandpa who loved to play cards and board games, color Easter eggs, and was willing to throw a baseball even in the coldest weather. He attended dance recitals, softball games, soccer games, and play performances at church and school. He was an amazing cheerleader, coach, mentor, and exemplary grandfather to his grandchildren.
Ed was a graduate of Siena College in Latham, NY and a high school graduate of Cohoes High School. He bravely served in the United States Army and is a Korean War Veteran. Ed and his unit that served in the Army remained close after the war. Their bond carried all of them well into their eighties, meeting annually in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where they would attend shows, share meals, and trade stories. Ed and his wife, Barbara, made the drive faithfully until they no longer could. It was a tradition he cherished year after year.
Following his years in the service, Ed worked for Bendix Corporation in Cohoes, NY. He then went on to work as a computer systems analyst for New York State, serving in the Higher Education Services Sector until his retirement. Ed dabbled in real estate during his retirement years and was a perpetual snow bird, escaping to Myrtle Beach with Barb every winter for decades. Ed additionally was a passionate Yankee fan and an enthusiastic golf player and spectator. He loved the Adirondacks and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed frequent overnight camping trips and long hikes with his sons, his son-in-law, and different friends who accompanied them. You can’t describe Ed without sharing that he was a “foodie” and loved a hot, home cooked meal; he had many favorites and dessert was one of them with apple pie having his heart. Ed was a kind, gentle soul; he was a dedicated family man who was honest, warmhearted, and generous. He was quick witted and funny and loved dearly by all who knew him. He was a treasured member of the family and will forever be in our hearts.

Calling hour for friends, neighbors, and our community will be from 10-11am at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Avenue in Colonie There will be a service that starts at 11am at Cannon Funeral Home with a procession to graveside at Memory’s Garden Cemetery located at 983 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Colonie.
