Edmund S. Steffler

Colonie - Edmund S. Steffler, age 100, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at his residence.

He was born in Watervliet, NY on April 9, 1921 to Michael Stefanowicz and Sophie Miezwa who originally came from Poland to Hazelton, Pennsylvania.  In 1939, Ed graduated from Watervliet High School and entered military service with the US Army 105th Infantry, 27th Division, on October 15th, 1940.

He served bravely in the United States, Hawaii, and the Island of Tinian with the Army Air Corps B-29 Group.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain in November 1945.  Ed then entered Siena College and earned a BBA in Accounting in 1949, followed by a lengthy career in business and finance. He was married to Frances Markham Steffler for 49 years, until her death on March 18, 1997. He resided in Latham, NY, until his move to Beltrone Senior Living Center in 2009.  Ed was employed by Farm Credit Association, Equitable Life Insurance Company, and 30 years as Treasurer of Farm Family Insurance Company, until his retirement on January 1, 1984.  He has been active in the community and a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Colonie Elks, and Our Lady of Assumption Church where he served as Eucharistic Minister and Usher.

His lifelong interest and enjoyment of music began as a child.  Ed belonged to the Musician’s Union Local 13 in Troy; and played professionally for many years.  He was an avid golfer and member of the Colonie Golf Course. He is remembered for his integrity, goodness, and boundless compassion.  His uniquely positive attitude and optimism are rooted in 100 years of goodness, love, faith, and dedication to family, country, and community; a life well lived that brings joy and strength to all who know him.

He is the father of Debbie (Rich) Chinski, Larry Steffler (Keith) and the late Judy Berkery; father-in- law of Thomas Berkery; grandfather of Kyrie Berkery-Morreale (Chris), Stefan (Stefanie) Chesbro, Jr., Matt Chesbro; great-grandchildren, Landon, Leila, Logan, Luca and Stefan III; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday morning at 9:30 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet Shaker Rd. Latham. Military honors will be offered at 9:45 am and the Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Hope Club of the Capital Region, 1 Penny Lane, Latham, NY 12110 in memory Of Edmund S. Steffler.
