Dorothy "Dot" M. Bloodgood

April 13, 1931 — July 7, 2022

Port Charlotte, FL - On July 7th, 2022, Dorothy M. Bloodgood, 91, passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family.  Dorothy graduated from McGraw High School in 1949 and was married the following year to the love of her life, the late Robert Bloodgood, before moving to Albany so that Dorothy could pursue her career with the State of New York.  At one time working in the library of the state Capitol and later as an analyst for the Senate Finance Committee, Dot eventually retired in 1986.  She didn't stay retired long though.  She soon took a job working in the drapery department at JC Penney for several more years.

Dot and Bob (or Rob) celebrated 68 years of marriage before Bob's passing in 2018.  They raised two children, Penny and Bill, and spent as much time as they could with their grandchildren Kate, Dan and Shannon, and their great grandson Lucas.  They traveled with them, went to all the ball games, and truly enjoyed being grandparents.  It would be remiss not to mention Bill Brockley, who both Bob and Dot loved as though he were their own and who Dot frequently said, with a wink and a chuckle, she'd "raised from a pup."

Besides her children, there were many people who knew her as Ma or even Nanny.  In her home, friends more often than not became family.  Dot volunteered for years with the Pine Bush Little League, Christ the King Church and Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church.  It was often through those endeavors that lasting relationships were formed.  Her friends and their children became family, and they should all know that she loved them very much and cherished those memories.

Dorothy was the only child of Alice Robinson and Earl Coates.  While she may not have had siblings, she adored Rob's family and all of her brothers and sisters-in-law.  She was predeceased by all but her dear sister-in-law Patricia, wife of Lynn Bloodgood, a pair with whom she and Rob spent many happy years traveling and vacationing all over the US.  Their escapades were legendary.  Aunt Dots, as she was known by her many nieces, nephews, and their children as well, loved to hear the stories of what everyone was doing and watching them all grow up back in and around Cortland.

Dot spent the last year of her life soaking up the sunshine in beautiful southwest Florida with her family.  She enjoyed wonderful days with family and friends from NY, sightseeing, dining, and even going to the beach.  She loved seeing her flowers in the yard and watching the birds, especially the cardinals, as they flitted about.  She enjoyed the sunset colors that painted the sky and could see them sometimes from her seat in the living room, and often from the park beside Charlotte Harbor where she enjoyed many picnic dinners and evening strolls.

"What we leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others" - Thucydides
