David Mafrici

February 28, 1932 — October 9, 2023

Colonie – David Mafrici, 91, was received into the arms of his Lord on Monday, October 9th.

He was born in the Bronx and was the youngest of 7 children born to Maria and Anthony Mafrici.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, enlisting at the age of 17.  He was stationed in Alaska for a time, working as a surveyor and enjoyed the time he spent with the local people.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1952.

He had a strong interest in math and science, and using the GI bill, he pursued a college degree in Civil Engineering, graduating with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from NYU and a master’s degree in Public Health from Columbia University.

In 1961, David passed the exam and became a licensed Professional Engineer.  He worked for the city of NY, town of Oyster Bay, and retired in 1994 from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.  He was called out of retirement many times to work for FEMA to help with disaster relief efforts during many hurricane seasons.  He met the love of his life Anita on a blind date, and they were happily married for 62 years before her passing.  They briefly lived in Queens before buying a house in Farmingdale on L.I., and eventually moved their family to the Town of Colonie in 1975 and lived there for 48 years.  David enjoyed building model airplanes but spending time with his family brought him the greatest joy.  He was completely devoted to his family, providing support in every way.  He had a smile that would light up the room.  He was never short on advice but always gave with his heart.  He was kind, generous, and selfless with his giving and loving.  He was a communicant of the Church of St Clare, serving on their eucharistic & funeral ministries for years.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents and siblings.  He is survived by his children Steven (Kathy) Mafrici, Michael Mafrici, Vicki (David) Lane, and Bill (Debbie) Mafrici, 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and family friends.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday morning, 10/24 at 10:15 at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave. Colonie then to St. Clare’s Church at 11am where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Family and friends are invited to visit with David’s family on Monday, 10/23 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Shriners Hospitals or the Wounded Warrior Project. To leave a message of condolence for the family, visit www.CannonFuneral.com
