Chloe Louise Anderson Correll passed away peacefully on July 24, 2023, surrounded by her family after a long illness. She was born on June 29, 1935, to the late Henry Anderson and Margaret Lang Anderson in Flushing NY. She was the beloved wife of Roderick Wessel Correll, whom she married on July 6, 1957, in Manhasset, NY. She was a graduate of Goucher College in Baltimore MD. Her principal focus after marrying Rod was being a mother and a housewife, roles she played very well. But she did work outside of her home. She was an English teacher until she became a mother.
In 1971 she began working as the fashion director at Hermann Loewenstein Inc., Rod’s family‘s leather business. Later she worked as manager of the Family Firm Institute’s office in Johnstown, NY, helping her husband build FFI’s membership during the early days of its existence.
Involvement in her community, particularly in Johnstown NY where the family lived for 50 years, was important to her. She was a member of Clio Study Club, the Burroughs Nature Study Club, the Aldine Society, the Kingsborough Garden Club and served on the Board of the Wells House Nursing Home. Her college also benefited from the work Chloe did for it, as alumni representative on Goucher’s Board of Trustees and as the head of fundraising for her Class of 1957. She was a devout Roman Catholic.
Chloe loved being a hostess and was the essence of style, grace and class in everything she did. Among her favorite hobbies were painting, gardening, ballet, opera and travel. The homes of her children and grandchildren are decorated with her artwork and for years, her pen and ink sketches of the family’s Victorian home on S. William St. would grace the cover of the couple’s Christmas cards. Her gardens were always colorful and exquisite in design. Her face lit up when listening to military marches, Gilbert & Sullivan patter songs, ballet music and the Christmas carols sung around a piano during annual holiday parties at the family’s home. Her yen to see the world prompted her to take many trips, both for pleasure and business, in the U.S. and abroad.
In addition to her husband Roderick, Chloe is survived by children and grandchildren; a daughter, Cathy (Frank) Yunker and their three daughters, Alexandra Yunker, Rebecca Yunker (Jack) Wilson and Emily Yunker; a son, Edward (Monica) Correll and their two sons, Thomas Correll and Daniel Correll. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Suzette (David) Tudor, several nieces, and a nephew. She was predeceased by her son Douglas Correll, her brother Ronald Anderson and his wife Patricia.
Of note are the facts that Cathy was born on Chloe’s 24th birthday and that, despite her intensifying illness, Chloe was able, on June 9th of this year, to attend the first wedding of one of her grandchildren, Cathy and Frank’s daughter Rebecca, to Jack Wilson. It was a splendid affair!
