Byron E. Sauter

Colonie - Byron E. Sauter, 63, of Valleywood Drive, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, June 29, 2024 at his home.

Born in Albany, NY, he was the son of John and Roberta Sauter.

Byron was a 1979 graduate of South Colonie High School and a 1983 graduate of University of Buffalo.  He then furthered his education, graduating in 1991 from Hudson Valley Community College with a degree in Nursing.

He was employed as a Registered Nurse at Albany Memorial Hospital and the Visiting Nurses prior to his career with the New York State Department of Health. He served the DOH in various positions.

Byron’s life passion was Fire Service and serving his community. He was a longtime member of Midway Fire Department and the Stanford Heights Fire Department. Over the years, he served both departments in various positions. In recent years, he was the Organizer of the Annual Red Cross Blood Drive at Midway Fire Department.

He also enjoyed sports. He was an avid Buffalo Bill and Buffalo Sabres Fan.  He also volunteered as a coach for the Albany Cougars, a hockey team for disabled athletes, associated with the American Special Hockey Association.

Byron is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Shari (Shepard) Sauter and his son Adam Sauter both of Colonie; his father John Sauter of Ormond Beach, FL and his mother Roberta Sauter of Colonie; two brothers: Reed Sauter and his wife Odalis of Venice, FL and Andrew Sauter of Knoxville, TN; a sister Jill Calder and her husband Bill of Lander, Wyoming as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours will be held from 10:00am to 11:30am Sunday, July 7 at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Avenue, Colonie. Followed by a service with Fire Department honors at 11:30am.
